New vehicle sales remain strong in San Diego County, and although we have seen a predicted small decline compared to our recent record levels, I’m happy to report that sales in our region have softened less than the country as a whole. Our cover story for this issue chronicles the long- term success we’ve achieved with the California Sales Training Academy (CSTA). This article is timely, as just recently I read in Automotive News that a lack of sales training is a primary cause of turnover within sales departments at franchised new car dealers. A high level of turnover has a ripple effect, as it negatively impacts the customer experience and morale among other employees. As a dealer partner in the CSTA, I’ve seen firsthand howproper training of sales fundamentals through Bob Heintz and the CSTA has improved the performance of our new hires, and ultimately resulted in higher customer satisfaction and a better bottom line for our sales department. It is also important to note that sales training is just one of many important benefits available to you as an NCDA member. As Chairman of the New Car Dealers Association, I am often reminded of the powerful resources and benefits the Association provides. I urge all dealers to be proactive with your NCDA membership by attending important dealer meetings and sem- inars that address many issues that are critical to our present and future business success, including personnel, regulations, risk manage- ment, etc. Take advantage of the NCDA’s legal and labor resources, utilize the outstanding meeting facilities, and support our world-class San Diego International Auto Show. On the dealer communication front, the NCDA has created a social media presence on Facebook and LinkedIn through which we share timely news and announcements relevant to your business as a San Diego new car dealer. Simply search for keywords“NewCar Dealers San Diego” to find us on each platform. I hope that everyone has had a productive summer and that we all experience a strong, successful and profitable 4th quarter. Sincerely, Richard Newendyke Chairman, New Car Dealers Association
