Spring 2016 11 Foundation – to name just a few. WoundedWarriors and Susan B. Komen are particularly dear to me… I lost a sister to breast cancer and I think supporting those service men and women that are hurt while in the armed services, sends such a powerful message of gratitude and solidarity. I am also particularly proud of the creation of the Vista Education Foundation, a non-profit group that provides funding for various projects and activities for the Vista Unified School District. This initiative was born from the idea of setting aside $100 for each vehicle sold. I viewed it as community revitalization through schools, as the board of directors would evaluate individual school's needs and take action – anything from purchasing new computers to painting a building to a new ball field. Giving back in my mind isn’t so much about how it translates to the bottom-line, it’s about defining how you want to live and the legacy you leave behind. Collectively, our organization has a need to be involved in our community and it’s something that makes me very proud. I feel strongly that community service is both a privilege and a responsibility. What are your thoughts on being selected as a TIME Dealer Nominee? This has been such an amazing experience. I am honored and humbled. As I stood on the NADA stage with the other nominees, I was so proud to be part of such a remarkable group of people. This particular group of dealers are of course all successful business owners that run quality organizations, but, what stood out to me was that they are also truly creative, charitable and just good people. It was an honor to stand with them. What do you think makes membership in the NCDA beneficial? I think anytime you can join an organization that serves the industry you are in, it’s beneficial. NCDA does such an outstanding job at protecting our industry’s interests, from laws and government affairs to legal issues, and, of course, they provide educational opportunities. I also think that the opportunity to network with other dealers is so important, both from a standpoint of learning from each other, but, also to develop relationships with truly outstanding people. Dean Mansfield and his staff do such an amazing job. Describe your all-time favorite vehicle (it can be one you’ve owned, or something on your wish list). And what are you driving today? A ’65 Porche SE Cabriolet. It’s in my garage and I drive it on weekends. I always wanted one. Tell us about your family. Marybeth and I have two sons – both of whom are in the business – and one daughter. We’re also fortunate to have six grandchildren, who range from 3 - 19. What’s your favorite way to spend your free time? Do you have any unusual hobbies? There is nothing too unusual about how I spend my time, when I’m not at the dealerships. Marybeth and I spend most of our free time with the kids and grandkids. I enjoy classic and fast car events - and often invite one of the older grandkids to join me. I play a little golf, and we enjoy traveling. JUST PUT IT ON THE COMPANY CARD…NOBODY WILL NOTICE. YOU’RE REALLY SHOWING OFF YOUR BEST ASSETS TODAY. I NEVER WEAR THE SAFETY GOGGLES. THEY LEAVE A MARK. THEY’RE WORRIED ABOUT OVERTIME. I’M JUST WORKING OFF THE CLOCK. 4747 Executive Drive • Suite 1000 • San Diego, CA 92121 858.597.9600 • FisherPhillips.com The things employees say when you’re not around can cause legal troubles for you.
