The California New Car Dealers Association is happy to report that six bills which could have severely curbed your ability to sell new vehicles were killed before making it to Governor Brown’s desk. Some of these bills resurfaced in slightly different versions from years past and we expect to see them again next year. Such as: Recalls – SB 686, authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D – Santa Barbara), would have prohibited dealers from selling or leasing any vehicle subject to a manufacturer’s recall until repaired. Many dealers successfully lobbied against this bill at Dealer Day in April. With the record number of recalls issued this year and the continued media attention, another recall bill that does not serve consumers’ or dealers’ best interest could gain momentum next year. Telematics – SB 994, authored by Senator Bill Monning (D – Santa Cruz), would have given unknown third party entities potentially limitless remote access to your customer’s vehicle and its data. This issue is also a hot topic with the media and will likely reemerge next year. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of dealers at Dealer Day, this negligent bill was killed the following week. In both instances, these dangerous bills were killed with a double edge sword strategy: CNCDA’s lobbying efforts and dealers directly reinforcing the message that these bills could harm consumers and your businesses at Dealer Day. Please mark your calendar for March 25, 2015 to join in the imperative in-person lobbying at Dealer Day. New Laws for 2015 and Those That Could Have Been
