San Diego County’s franchised new car and light truck dealers continued to be a significant regional economic generator in 2012. Sales of new and pre-owned vehicles increased for the third consecutive year. Total dealership sales increased to $8.6 billion, an increase of more than $1.67 billion as compared to 2011. Once again, San Diego County dealers increased their employee count in 2012 to over 13,000 full- and part-time employees. Ninety-eight percent of dealers provided health insurance to employees and their families. Additionally, dealerships paid $641 million in payroll and more than $14 million in workers’ compensation premiums in 2012. Additionally, a number of dealerships began extensive renovations, creating additional employment opportunities for other businesses in San Diego County. Overall, San Diego County’s franchised new car dealers made purchases fromother California businesses totaling $185million, a 16 percent increase vs. 2011. Collectively, NCDADealer Members support awide range of charities and civic organizations. In 2012, dealers contributed nearly $2.75 million – an increase of 14 percent as compared to 2011. Another significant economic contribution to the region’s economy by franchised new car dealers is advertising. Last year, NCDA Dealer Members spent nearly $85.5 million to advertise their dealerships, an increase of $10.5 million vs. the year prior.
