Winter Issue 2013 11 Tell us about the civic or charitable organizations you are involved in. I served on the board of Catholic Charities board for 15 years, the University of San Diego board for 15 years (serving three of those years as chairman), and the Timken Museum of Art board for 15 years (serving three of those years as president). I was a founding board member for the Nativity Prep School and served for three years, and I am currently serving as president of the Epiphany Charter School. What are your thoughts or feelings on being selected as a Time Dealer Nominee? I’m very honored. When you get something like this, you feel as much as ever that you have to live to up to the honor. Ally Financial will be contributing $1,000 to each nominee’s charity of choice. Have you decided yet which one you’d like yours to go to Rachel’s Women’s Center in downtown San Diego. What do you think makes membership in the NCDA beneficial? We’re in one of the least business-oriented states in the country and it’s very important to have the solidarity and the comfort of having an organization that’s working for you. Describe your all-time favorite vehicle (it can be one you’ve owned, or something on your wish list). Oh, and what are you driving today? My all-time favorite is a Type 1 E-Type Jaguar Roadster. This has been my favorite car for years and I didn’t think it made sense to drive one because I wasn’t originally a Jaguar dealer. But now that I am, I got one. Today, I drive a British racing green, 1965 Roadster. Tell us about your family. My wife, Karen, and I have two daughters, Jo Hannah and Susanah, who both work at the dealership. What’s your favorite way to spend your free time? Do you have any unusual hobbies? I really enjoy free diving and spear fishing. We have a home in the Bahamas, where it’s illegal to use a spear gun so you have to use a spear sling. It’s just about the most exciting thing I’ve ever done. I’ve trained with three world champions so I’ve become pretty proficient. I’m also an avid sportsman and do hunting, fishing and hiking and I collect Rembrandt etchings.
