24 San Diego Dealer T he 2012 elections resulted in a number of changes to San Diego’s political landscape. The redrawing of state Assembly, state Senate and U.S. Congressional districts, coupled with some state legisla- tors being termed out and former Congressman Bob Filner’s successful campaign forMayor of SanDiego, bring several new legislators to represent San Diego County for at least the next two years. U.S. House of Representatives 49th Congressional District The 49th Congressional District was easily retained by Darrell Issa. Like the other Congressional Districts, the 49th was redrawn for the 2012 election. It now includes Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, Camp Pendleton and several SouthernOrange County communities. 50th Congressional District Redistricting changes to the 50th Congressional District had little impact on the re-election of Duncan D. Hunter. This district includes a large section of east San Diego County and several well-known cities: Jamul, Rancho San Diego, Alpine, Lakeside, Santee, Ramona, Escondido, San Marcos, Valley Center and Fallbrook. 51st Congressional District Former San Diego City Councilman, State Assemblyman and State Senator Juan Vargas easily won the 51st Congressional District seat that was vacated by nowMayor of San Diego Bob Filner. The major municipalities in this district include Chula Vista, National City and El Centro. 52nd Congressional District In one of the most hotly contested Congressional races in San Diego County, challenger Scott Peters narrowly defeated incumbent 2012 Elections Recap Congressman Brian Bilbray. The election of Peters, a former City of San Diego Councilman and Port Commissioner, results in this Congressional seat being filled by a Democrat for the first time since 1990. This district underwent major re-alignment and includes portions of the City of San Diego, La Jolla, Poway and Coronado. 53rd Congressional District Likewise, the geographic changes to the 53rd Congressional District had no impact on the re-election of Susan Davis. She now represents communities that include Bonita, La Presa, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, La Mesa, El Cajon and Mission Valley. California State Senate 39th Senate District The only State Senate race in San Diego County saw incumbent Marty Block defeat former Assemblyman George Plescia. With the changes to this district, Block now represents a large portion of the City of San Diego as well as Coronado, Solana Beach and Del Mar. 40th Senate District The 40th Senate seat that was vacated by Juan Vargas and his election to the U.S. House of Representatives will be filled by special election in 2013.
